Milwaukee Believes in its Drivers Being Quiet and Being Insured
In Milwaukee, making noise and failing to carry proof of insurance are two big no-noes.
The only thing that I knew about Milwaukee before I started researching their traffic and car insurance laws was baseball and brews. Oh, and Laverne and Shirley lived there.
And while the insurance laws I found are pretty typical of everywhere else around the nation, I was impressed by the vehicle noise laws.
Quiet, Please in Milwaukee
Going through the Milwaukee traffic laws was very interesting. While I am sure other large cities have similar laws, this is the first time I have seen actual penalties and restrictions on the books for noisy cars.
Straight from the Milwaukee traffic laws is the first law for noisy car horns:
“If an automobile horn, as provided for by s. 347.38, Wis. Stats., malfunctions on public or private property within the limits of the city and emits an audible continuous sound for more than 3 minutes, and if the operator or owner of the vehicle cannot be located after a reasonable attempt to find said operator or owner, the malfunctioning horn shall be deemed a nuisance, and the police department shall summarily abate the nuisance by any reasonable means.”
The second noisy car law that follows soon after the first one:
“PROHIBITED. No person shall make unnecessary and annoying noises with a motor vehicle, by squealing tires, excessive acceleration of engine, by emitting unnecessary and loud muffler noises, or by suffering or permitting his or her unattended motor vehicle’s audio alarm to be activated without evidence of any tampering with the doors, locks, windows or any other part of the motor vehicle.”
These are just two of the noise laws in Milwaukee, both of which carry penalties and fines for breaking them, including possible jail time.
Milwaukee Car Insurance
Milwaukee car insurance requirements are determined by the state of Wisconsin. In fact, Wisconsin decides the insurance requirements for everybody in the state just to keep things simple and the same across the board.
So if your vehicle is registered in the state you are required to carry no less than $10,000 in Milwaukee car insurance coverage for any damage that you may do to another person’s property with your vehicle. This coverage is called property damage liability coverage.
You are also required to carry coverage to pay for any medical expenses related to a car accident that you cause. This coverage is only for people that were not in your vehicle at the time of the accident. This particular Milwaukee car insurance coverage is called bodily injury liability coverage, and you can have no less than $25,000 in coverage for a single person injured and $50,000 in total coverage with this coverage to be able to legally drive in Wisconsin.
So travel safe and travel quietly and you will be just fine in Milwaukee.
