You Can Drive Without Virginia Beach Car Insurance
Virginia Beach car insurance is actually optional, but may not actually be a good option.
In Virginia Beach, and everywhere else in Virginia for that matter, you are allowed to drive around without the normally required car insurance………if you pay a fee. Yep, you knew there was a catch and there it is.
The fee is called the “Uninsured Motor Vehicle (UMV) Fee” and it is $500 a year, payable to the DMV every time you renew your vehicle registration. This is not insurance coverage that is provided through the state, it is simply a way to be able to drive your vehicle around without having to pay for car insurance.

Drivers may look at the UMV fee as a great thing so they don’t have to be forced to have car insurance, but there are two reasons why this is actually a bad thing for you.
First, the fee is $500 a year, per vehicle. I am not sure what you pay for car insurance, but my car insurance is less than $500 a year. So I am paying less by just buying the car insurance that my state requires, than what people are paying to NOT have to carry car insurance.
So the idea that this will save you money by not having to pay for car insurance, pretty much goes right out the window for most of us.
Second, why would you pay not to have to carry car insurance and then drive around without that protection? If you cause a car accident and don’t have liability coverage for your vehicle, you have to pay for the other person’s damages and injuries out of your own pocket.
Then, not only will you be paying the $500 for the right not have to carry car insurance, you will also be paying even more money out for not having that insurance you paid to not have.
Wouldn’t it just be easier and cheaper for you to get the car insurance?

For those that would rather simplify their life and just get the required insurance coverage, you are required to carry:
- $20,000 in liability property damage
- $25,000 in liability coverage for the medical expenses of one person injured
- $50,000 in liability coverage for the total accident if there are two or more injured.
The Virginia Beach car insurance requirements are the same throughout the state, so if you have the required coverage in Virginia Beach you are good in all the other cities and towns as well.
