Allstate’s Toddler Mayhem

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Ask An Insurance Question, Research Last Updated: 01/18/2012

Regressing into a toddler, Mayhem is back for a little in-car distraction.

Summary

Commercial opens with Allstate’s Mayhem strapped into a toddler’s seat in the back seat of the car. His car seat requires the use of both seats in the back. He has a Sippy cup in one hand and his other hand in a bag of cheerios.

Mayhem: MOMMY! Mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy!

We get the mischievous Mayhem grin that looks like “this is just the beginning and watch what I am going to do next”.

Mayhem: Mommy! MOMMY! (takes drink from Sippy) MOMMY!

Mayhem throws the cup in the direction of the driver, who we assume is mommy. A full-blown tantrum begins with handfuls of cheerios being thrown, more screaming and finally the emptying of the rest of the cheerios bag.

“Mayhem is Everywhere” appears on screen during the tantrum, until it goes black with the Allstate hands and the 4 insurance markets Allstate writes in (Auto, home, life and retirement). Below that is the ALLSTATE.COM, AGENT AND 888-ALLSTATE.

Announcer: Dollar for dollar no body protects you from Mayhem, like Allstate.

Point of the Commercial

Mayhem strikes again, this time as a distracting, screaming toddler. Like with all Mayhem commercials that Allstate has created, he brings to our attention another way that a car accident can happen; creating the need for insurance.

Anyone that is a parent knows from experience that a screaming child in the car grates on your nerves and breaks your driving concentration. The double whammy comes when the child decides to start throwing things. This not only has the parent ducking (if they are lucky to see it coming), it has them still trying to control the car at the same time.

Doing both isn’t always done successfully.

What They Want you to Do

Allstate wants you to realize that there are many other things in life that we don’t think about that can cause car accidents. They are not trying to start any type of debate about parenting, but rather bring up the situation that even things in the car can distract you into an accident.

Allstate makes no direct call to action, but indirectly give you the ways that you can contact them.

My Opinion

I am usually a big fan of the Allstate Mayhem commercials, but this one is my very least favorite. It is my least favorite to the point that I really don’t care for it and I don’t find it as funny as the other commercials. Honestly, if this was the only Allstate Mayhem commercial in existence, I would probably just stay away from Allstate. They really do nothing in the commercials to make me want to contact them.

I think though, because these Allstate Mayhem commercials have been seen by most drivers, that there is an understood premise to these commercials now. It just has the feeling that Allstate didn’t put a whole lot into this one. I think that we are more forgiving because we understand what the commercial is supposed to be and the other ones have been so funny.

However, I am giving this Allstate Mayhem commercial a thumbs down.
