Insurance Analysis for the BMW M3

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 10/30/2012

The 2012 BMW M3 is a classy car, but may carry a higher insurance tag than you expect.

Starting at $60,000, the 2012 BMW M3 is out of the price range for most of us. But like the adage goes, “If you can afford the car, you can afford the insurance.” If you are pushing the limit of your budget just with the new car payment, you are going to want to call your insurance and get a quote to make sure that you are going to be able to pay for the insurance premium that is going to tag along.

The M3 is a high-performance vehicle that was first developed in 1986. It has a high-revving engine with 414 horsepower, and two different transmissions (a seven-speed double-clutch and a six-speed manual). The 2012 M3 is only available as a coupe or a convertible this year. The M3 sedan is not available as it is going through the process of being redesigned.

Safety Testing for the 2012 BMW M3

There was no safety testing done on the 2012 M3 by either the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The 2012 BMW M3 does have some safety equipment that is not found in other vehicles, like more airbags and headlight safety features. But most of the safety equipment found in the M3 can also be found in the newer models that many other manufacturers are putting out today.

2012 BMW M3 Safety Recalls

There are no safety recalls for this vehicle at this time.

Insurance for the 2012 BMW M3

There is no safety data to base whether the vehicle is going to protect the driver and passenger in the vehicle. However, with how many airbags that are in the M3 you are probably going to be a little bruised up, but otherwise okay.

The comprehensive and collision coverage for the vehicle is going to be on the higher side, with how much the vehicle is worth. The BMW M3 is not a super-high priced vehicle like some of the other ones we have reviewed, but it is still on the higher end of the auto price range; which makes its replacement parts more expensive.

What will help with the insurance is that it is not a large vehicle and it is not technically categorized as a sports car; both of which help to keep the liability insurance down.

Overall, the insurance on the BMW M3 for 2012 is going to be on the moderate to high side
