Irvine Car Insurance Laws and Other Important Rules

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 05/09/2014

Today we talk about 2 other important driving rules, in addition to Irvine car insurance laws.

irvine car insurance

Better have proof of your Irvine car insurance ready also.

The requirement that you have to have Irvine car insurance to drive should be as common knowledge as the fact that you have to put gas in the car to make it go.  California, who made Irvine car insurance a requirement, has been enforcing mandatory car insurance coverage in the state for a very long time now.

If you don’t know that car insurance is required, you are either a very new driver or one that has had their head in the sand. But just to recap, here are the minimum car insurance coverages that you are required to have if you want to drive in the state:

  • $5,000 property damage liability coverage
  • $15,000 bodily injury liability coverage for one person
  • $30,000 bodily injury liability coverage for multiple injuries

In addition to these mandatory car insurance requirements, here are the details of two other laws in Irvine that drivers need to be careful to follow.

Irvine Driver’s License

Another California law, but enforced by the City of Irvine, is graduated driver’s licenses. Here’s the down low for you new drivers or parents of soon-to-be drivers.

First, it is no longer a two-step process, where you used to get your permit to learn to drive and then your driver’s license with no restrictions. Now it is a three-step process:

  1. Permit – Given no younger than age 15.5, and while the new driver has it they are expected to obtain 50 hours of supervised driving practice to move to the next level.
  2. Provisional License – This is the new step that was added between the permit and regular license. To get this license, drivers between 16 and 18 have to pass a behind-the-wheel driving test after they obtain the 50 hours of driving practice. Drivers with a provisional license may only drive between the hours of 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. and are only allowed to drive alone, with parents, or a licensed driver over the age of 25.
  3. Full-privilege License – An unrestricted license that is granted after the requirements for the first two steps are completed and there are no legal restrictions on the driver’s driving record.

Irvine DUIs

You should already know by now that you shouldn’t drink and drive. If you do get a DUI, in addition to the regular penalties and fines you will face, you also need to know the following:

  • You have to reimburse the City of Irvine the cost of the emergency responders that had to be dispatched because you were driving drunk.
  • You have 30 days to pay for the emergency response bill. If you do not pay within the 30 days you will be charged late fees and fines. If you still have not paid after 90 days, your account is sent to a collection agency.
  • Your Irvine car insurance company is not allowed to pay the City of Irvine this expense on your behalf.
