Omaha car insurance is mandated by the state, but is enforced and required in every your do related to driving.

Omaha car insurance regulations flow from the state down to the city level.

To be able to drive you have to have Omaha car insurance, or some sort of verification of financial responsibility showing you can pay for an accident you are at fault for. Without this insurance or verification of financial responsibility, not only will you get a traffic citation for driving without insurance, you won’t even be able to register your car.

Minimum Omaha Car Insurance Coverages

The amount of coverage that you must have for your Omaha car insurance is determined by the State of Nebraska, not the City of Omaha. So if you purchase a car insurance policy in Omaha, the limits on that policy are just as valid in Lincoln as they are there.

There are only 3 coverages that you absolutely have to have on your Omaha car insurance, and all three of them are liability coverages. Liability coverage pays for the expenses that another person may have due to an accident that is your fault. This coverage does not pay for anything for your vehicle or any of your own medical expenses. But, there are additional coverages that you can add to your Omaha car insurance policy to make sure that you do have insurance protection for your vehicle and yourself.

As far as the state minimum requirements go though, you are only required to have:

  • $25,000 in liability coverage for damage you do to another person’s property.
  • $25,000 in liability coverage for the medical expenses that a person not in your vehicle may have due to an accident that you cause.
  • $50,000 in total liability coverage for all the medical expenses of everyone involved in a single accident may have.

Omaha Car Insurance for Vehicle Registration

To be able to register a vehicle in Omaha (Douglas County), you have to be able to show proof of the above required car insurance. You don’t need your declaration page to show the exact coverages that you have, you just need an original document from the insurance company that has:

  • The insurance company name
  • The name of the insured
  • The Vehicle Identification Number
  • The year, make, and model of the vehicle being registered
  • The expiration date of the insurance policy

You don’t need to show the coverages to verify that you are carrying at least the minimum required coverages because Omaha car insurance agents aren’t allowed to sell a car insurance policy with anything less than those requirements.
