Happy Independence Day from Car Insurance Guidebook

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 07/04/2013

Have a safe Independence Day for both your life and your car insurance.

Independence Day

Pay attention to the road this Independence Day to prevent your car insurance premium from exploding.

From all of us here at Car Insurance Guidebook we want to wish you a fun and safe Independence Day. Be safe while you are grilling, be safe while you are setting off fireworks, and most importantly be safe while you are driving.

Being careless today, especially when driving, can lead to financial issues you don’t want to deal with later down the road. Financial issues where the increase in your car insurance is just the beginning.

Don’t Let Fireworks Increase Your Car Insurance

It’s hard not to want to watch the fireworks going off all around you on the 4th of July. But if you are trying to watch the fireworks and drive at the same time you are just asking for a car accident to happen.

If there is a flurry of fireworks going on or the main display from your city has started, pull the car off the road and watch the fireworks. It is never a good thing to try and do two things at once especially when it is driving and enjoying the excitement and awe of colorful things blowing up in the sky.

If you can’t stop or you don’t want to stop, then keep your focus on the road.

Keeping Focused Will Keep Your Car Insurance Down

Aerial fireworks are not the only thing you need to prevent being distracted by this Independence Day. You also need to keep your eyes out for children running the streets with sparklers and ones that are not being supervised by parents distracted by friends while at BBQ’s.

Also keep aware of people setting off ground fireworks on the streets you are driving down. Even though these are usually adults, they are paying attention to the fireworks they are setting off and not the cars wanting to drive down the road. So you need to be the one on the lookout to keep both yourself and them safe.

Driving Drunk = Increased Car Insurance Premium

Independence Day has got to be the dumbest time in the entire year for people to drink and drive. First, the cops are on emphasis patrols to catch drink drivers, so right there your odds have increased that you are going to get pulled over and caught.

Second, there are too many distractions on the road already because of the holiday that sober drivers sometimes have a hard time not getting in an accident. How are you going to be able to navigate these same distractions after you have been drinking and not get in an accident? And remember that accident will again lead to getting caught by the police for drunk driving.

So this Independence Day, chill on the booze and enjoy another refreshing beverage to celebrate.

How Do I Get Verification of a Not-At-Fault Accident?

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Ask An Insurance Question Last Updated: 07/01/2013

Q: I have recently switched insurance companies and they want verification of a not-at-fault accident from a year ago. I no longer have that info. How do I get one to send to the company so that my payments don’t go up?

A: Contact the insurance company that you were with at the time of the accident and have them write you a letter that the accident was not-at-fault. If your insurance company at the time had nothing to do with the accident you were in, contact the insurance company of the person that was at fault for the accident and paid for your damages to have them write the letter for your new insurance company.

Albuquerque Driving Tips to Keep You Out of Traffic Court

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 06/29/2013

Keeping out of traffic court in Albuquerque is easier than you may think.

albuquerque car insurance

You don’t need Albuquerque car insurance in on of these during the balloon festival.

Driving around without Albuquerque car insurance is just one of the many infractions that can land you a citation and a day in court. To help our fellow drivers out there in Albuquerque, here are some tips to follow to prevent you from having to have that day in court.

The Most Common Albuquerque Traffic Citations

To keep things simple, the Albuquerque police department provides their website visitors with a table of fines and court costs they will face for common traffic citations. For you as a driver, this is a great list to be aware of so that you know what the police in Albuquerque are mostly on the lookout for:

  • Speeding
  • Running Stop Signs
  • Running Red Lights
  • Failing to Yield
  • Not using our turn signal
  • Tailgating
  • Child car seats not being used properly
  • Not using your seat belt
  • Broken windshield
  • Broken or no headlights
  • Broken or no tail lights

Kind of odd, but a good sign, that no having car insurance is not on this list of common traffic citations.

Albuquerque Car Insurance Requirements

Albuquerque car insurance requirements include 3 different liability coverages. First, you need to have bodily injury coverage to pay for any medical related expenses that another person may have from an injury you caused them with your vehicle. Bodily injury liability coverage comes with two different minimum limits; the first being $25,000 for one person and the second is $50,000 for all injuries if there are more than one injured.

The other liability coverage that you will have to have is to pay for the damage to any property you damage with your vehicle. This property damage liability coverage has to be at least $10,000 to be considered valid Albuquerque insurance coverage.

These Albuquerque car insurance coverages are determined by the State of New Mexico and are the same throughout the state, but not having them will still get you an Albuquerque traffic citation.

Getting Your Albuquerque Citations Dismissed

If you can’t afford your traffic citation or you just didn’t have proof of the information you needed that caused your citation (no proof of insurance, driver’s license, etc.) there are certain Albuquerque traffic citations that can be dismissed. For example, if you get cited for not having license plates or your vehicle registration on hand you can bring in your current registration before 4pm on the day before your traffic arraignment date your citation may be dismissed.

Other citations that can be dismissed include:

  • Suspended driver’s license (bring in your valid New Mexico driver’s license)
  • Failure to change your name or address on driver’s license (bring verification that you driver’s license has your current information)
  • No driver’s license (Bring in your valid New Mexico driver’s license)
  • Defective Equipment (bring “Proof you have replaced/repaired the light(s). If you have made this repair yourself, a receipt listing the specific item(s) purchased. An invoice, from an automotive business verifying windshield repair or verifying required repairs.” (Albuquerque Police Department) )
  • No Albuquerque Car Insurance (bring verification you had insurance coverage in place when you got the citation)

Ready to Take a Gamble with Las Vegas Car Insurance

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 06/27/2013

So do you think you will save more money by driving with or without Las Vegas car insurance?

Welcome to Las Vegas!

Driving around without car insurance is no different than taking your money to the casino and placing a bet. At the casino, the gamble is if you are going to lose your money or come out with more than you walked in with.

With car insurance though, the gamble is if you going to be able to keep your money in your pocket by not paying for car insurance or are you going to lose more than what you have by getting into an accident without the insurance coverage.

Las Vegas Intersections That Decrease Your Odds

Per a report from the Las Vegas PD, there are 5 intersections that drivers need to be very cautious at. This would be especially true if you have placed your bet and are driving without car insurance. These intersections have been listed as the “Top Injury Collision Intersections” in the city for the time period of 12/26/12 through 6/18/12.

#1- Rainbow and Charleston (14 injury accidents)

#2 – Sahara and Decatur (12 injury accidents)

#3 – Flamingo and Arville (11 injury accidents)

#4 – Boulder Hwy and Lamb (10 injury accidents)

#5 Flamingo and Eastern (10 injury accidents)

Las Vegas Car Insurance Ante

Not only do you want to have Las Vegas car insurance to make sure you are protected when you are driving through one of the above dangerous intersections, but it is also mandatory if you want to drive at all. Las Vegas car insurance requirements are set forth by the State of Nevada and are the same across the state. So the car insurance you are required to have in Vegas will be the same as what you are required to have in Reno or Carson City.

The least amount of Las Vegas car insurance that is allowed to be able to drive is listed as 15/30/10. Broken down these numbers mean the following for you:

15 = $15,000 of bodily injury liability coverage for anyone not in your vehicle injured by you while you are driving.

30 = $30,000 also for bodily injury liability coverage, but this is the total that the insurance company will pay out for injuries from a single accident if there are two or more people injured.

10 = $10,000 of property damage liability coverage to pay for any damage you cause to another person’s vehicle.

The Decreased Odds on Las Vegas Car Insurance

Yes, you could save money by not carrying Las Vegas car insurance; there is no question about that. But, if you get into a car accident and you don’t have Las Vegas car insurance you will have to pay for all the damage that you cause right out of your pocket. And with how expensive car repairs and medical bills are today, it’s a promise that you will pay out more than you saved by not having the car insurance in place.

Not only do you have to not get into a car accident for this gamble to pay off, you also have to make sure you don’t get pulled over or caught by Nevada’s electronic insurance verification system. If you get caught you are looking at license suspensions, fines, reinstatement fees, and higher insurance rates when you do get insurance.

Now, is it really worth the gamble to drive around without Las Vegas car insurance then?

Why Are There No Company Follow Ups in Your Insurance Company Customer Reviews?

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Ask An Insurance Question Last Updated: 06/20/2013

Question: I noticed insurance customers can post reviews on their insurance company, but there aren’t any responses from insurance companies. Are they not allowed to respond? Or do they just choose not to respond?

Great question about our insurance company customer reviews! Until this question was asked I never really thought about the insurance companies responding to what people were saying about them.

So to answer your first question, no, we don’t prevent insurance companies from responding to their reviews. The only time we have ever had an insurance company respond to something on our site is when we did an analysis on a PEMCO commercial. (Click here to view that article and response from PEMCO).

It may not be so much that they choose not to respond, it just may be that their company media person has never come across our site before to make an “official” comment.

Car Insurance Guidebook Unravels the Car Insurance Mystery

Unless you work in the car insurance industry, the topic is probably a mystery to you. The words deductible, comprehensive, collision, liability, premium, loss of use and bodily injury are all gibberish when they reach your ears.

Unfortunately, insurance is something that you are required to have by law if you want to drive. Because of how confusing it is many people go around in almost an insurance daze while they get car insurance quotes from the auto insurance companies that they have heard of. In reality, they are completely lost as to what they are actually buying.

Instead of looking at what each insurance company offers in the terms of protection for both themselves and their car, they are instead looking for cheap car insurance. Finding the cheapest car insurance coverage makes having to buy the required product all that much less painful, but misses the whole point of having insurance.

Learning about insurance through your insurance agent or websites like Car Insurance Guidebook will give you the upper hand when you looking for car insurance. You can take your knowledge and not only find the best price for insurance, you can use it to find really great insurance to protect you and your assets. Then you aren’t stuck settling for just average car insurance that can hurt you financially if you ever need it because there isn’t enough protection.

For example, when looking for insurance the car insurance rates are just the first of many factors that need to be taken into account when you are shopping around for car insurance. You also need to take into account the type of vehicle that you are driving. Many people don’t know this.

Are you driving around a vehicle that is a new sedan and can be protected under any blanket insurance policy? Or do you have an old car that you fixed up that needs special protection and could be better covered under classic car insurance?

Don’t just assume that when you compare car insurance that it will be a one-size-fits-all policy. This is where the insurance knowledge will come in handy; you will know what you need to protect yourself and your vehicle.

You will understand what your insurance agent is talking about when they use insurance terms and you will actually be able to make an informed decision. This is much better for you instead of the “nod and smile” approach people take in their insurance agent’s office.

Also just like your life changes your insurance needs will change. This year you may just need to learn about the best deductible to have. Next year you may need to educate yourself on car insurance for young drivers. As the years pass, motorcycle insurance may be something you will need to know.

Many wise people say that you never stop learning, so take their advice and educate yourself on the insurance that you spend a lot of money on and can’t get away with not having.
