Earned USAA Insurance Coverage

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 02/10/2013

This is a very personal USAA Insurance commercial of where some families earned the right to be USAA members.

Commercial

This USAA Insurance commercial opens with two adorable kids telling us where they became eligible for USAA. With each scene change we see a new person or family telling us where they earned their USAA eligibility.

Kids: Ours was earned in Djibouti, Africa 2004.

Middle-aged woman: The Battle of Bataan 1942.

Three sisters sitting on their front porch: Fort Benning, Georgia 1999.

Announcer: USAA Auto Insurance is often handed down from generation to generation, because it offers a superior level of protection and because USAA’s commitment to serve the military, veterans, and their families is without equal. Begin your legacy, get an auto insurance quote. USAA, we know what it means to serve.

Point of the USAA Insurance Commercial

USAA Insurance is only for military and their dependents, a lot of people may find that this is not fair when they mistakenly contact USAA for an insurance quote. This commercial offers a justification to people that may not understand why USAA only serves the military and their families. That it is not just an exclusive club that you can pay your way into, but that it was earned through military service and even possibly with the life of a military member.

It is also shows the wide span of different generations of military that USAA offers coverage for.

What USAA Insurance Wants You to Do

I am sure USAA would like those that don’t qualify for USAA coverage, because they were not in the military or have immediate family in the military, to understand what those that do qualify had to do. USAA is also reaching out to those with connections to the military or immediate family in the military that may not have known that they may qualify for coverage through USAA.

My Opinion of the USAA Insurance Commercial

I know that most of the USAA commercials talk about eligibility and the coverage being generational, but this commercial has a different feel. Instead of just talking about those that are eligible, it shows how and why they are eligible.

I like this new approach that USAA Insurance took with their commercials. We didn’t just have to see pictures of people in uniform, but we got to hear where they were in the military. From my own experience with USAA, so far I like the commercial better than the experience I have had trying to qualify for USAA so far.

I give this USAA Insurance two thumbs up.

Insurance Analysis of the 2012 Lincoln MKZ

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 02/06/2013

Lincoln can thank their Super Bowl commercial for drawing our attention to the 2012 Lincoln MKZ.

2012 Lincoln MKZ

The Lincoln MK

The commercial we all saw during the Super Bowl was not for the 2012 Lincoln MKZ, but for the redesigned 2013 MKZ. Since the 2013 MKZ is fairly new on the road there is not a lot of information available for this vehicle yet. Without information, it is hard to analyze how much the insurance is going to be, even for the insurance companies.

Normally with the lack of information the insurance companies have to rely on the insurance rates from the previous year to set the premium. So we are doing something similar and just analyzing the 2012 instead.

2012 Lincoln MKZ Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated this vehicle as being fairly safe. It is not a Top Safety Pick, but it is close. Of all 5 tests that the IIHS conducted on the 2012 Lincoln MKZ it rated “good” on 4 of the 5 tests. The only area that the MKZ did not rate well on was the crash test on the front corner of the vehicle where it only received a “marginal” rating.

To give you an idea of where these ratings rank, here are the IIHS ratings from best to worst as they rank them:

  • Good
  • Acceptable
  • Marginal
  • Poor

2012 Lincoln MKZ Recalls

There were no recalls found for the 2012 Lincoln MKZ at the time of writing this article.

2012 Lincoln MKZ Insurance Thoughts

With the fairly decent safety ratings, the medical payments and pip coverages are going to be about average. If the 2012 Lincoln MKZ had better safety ratings the premium would probably be lower for these coverages.

The liability coverage will be average as it is a sedan and can’t cause as much damage as other larger vehicles. The driving statistics for a Lincoln are very wide spread though, with the Lincoln popular with both drivers that have families, as well as elderly drivers.

The coverage that is most likely going to be higher than other comparable sedans on the road today is the comprehensive and collision coverage. The 2012 Lincoln MKZ cost about $34,000 to $36,500; making it more expensive to replace in the event of a total loss, and also more to repair because the parts are more expensive.

Overall, the 2012 Lincoln MKZ is going to be a little more expensive to insure than other sedans, but if you can afford the car, you can probably afford the slightly higher insurance.

Happy Super Bowl Commercial Day!

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Advertising, Research Last Updated: 02/03/2013

For many across the nation, today is more about the Super Bowl commercial than the actual game.

Today is the big day! Which one will come out on top as the best? Which one will flop? No, I am not talking about the 49ers or the Ravens I am talking about all of the commercials that debut this afternoon.

While today is a big day for football fans, there are some that are even trying to petition to make Super Bowl Sunday a national holiday, not everyone will watch the game today for the sport. Many sit to watch the commercials and then take a break to get more food and stretch when the game comes back on.

So for those that come for the commercials, here are a couple of Allstate Mayhem football commercials and one Allstate Super Bowl commercial from 2011 to tide you over until this afternoon.

Allstate Mayhem 2011 Super Bowl Commercial

Mayhem brings his much expected car insurance problems to us, this time as snow.

Allstate Mayhem Flies High as a Team Flag

With how hard he hit the car windshield behind him, it made me hurt; it makes you wonder if he does his own stunts.

Allstate’s Mayhem Leads a Lost Team

Are you hoping the lost team this year will be the Ravens or the 49ers? As a Seahawks fan, but a San Francisco native I may have to sit this Super Bowl out.

Streaking with Allstate’s Mayhem

It just wouldn’t be a Super Bowl to talk about without someone streaking, landing, or general disrupting the game for their 15 minutes of fame.

Keep your eyes open today for any new Super Bowl commercials for other car insurance companies this year and let us know what you find after the game.

13 Car Insurance Savings in 2013

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 02/02/2013

Finding car insurance savings in 2013 is as easy as these 13 steps.

car insurance savings

These car insurance savings ideas can keep your money with you were it belongs.

Car Insurance Savings #1

Drop rental car coverage if you have multiple vehicles in the home.

Car Insurance Savings #2

Drop towing coverage if you already have it with another company. If you already have towing coverage somewhere else, don’t pay extra for it on your insurance policy.

Car Insurance Savings #3

Contact your insurance company or agent to make sure that you are getting all the discounts you can. Sometimes discounts, such as Good Student Discounts can be missed.

Car Insurance Savings #4

Combine your insurance coverages together. If you have your car insurance with one company and your homeowner’s insurance with another company you are losing money. By putting the coverages together under one company you can qualify for a multi-policy discount.

Car Insurance Savings #5

Combine the vehicles in one household together. If you are living with a boyfriend or girlfriend, or you have adult children living with you can put everyone’s vehicles together under one car insurance policy to qualify for a multi-car discount.

Car Insurance Savings #6

Remove liability and collision coverages from vehicles that are being stored and not driven.

Car Insurance Savings #7

Refuse to insure teens that are reckless drivers. Driving is a privilege, and if your teen driver is reckless behind the wheel don’t allow them to drive. Take their license away and remove them from your insurance policy. Why should you have to pay extra for insurance because your teen refuses to be responsible?

Car Insurance Savings #8

Make your teen driver pay for their own car insurance. When I was a teen driver if I wanted to drive, I had to be able to pay for my portion of the car insurance bill. My own child, who is only 13 currently, has already been warned that he will also have to pay for his own insurance if he wants to drive.

Teach them financial responsibility early and they will be able to function better in the real world when they are adults.

Car Insurance Savings #9

Remove comprehensive and collision coverage from old vehicles. There gets to be a point in the lives of vehicles where it costs more to insure them than what the insurance company would pay out if they were totaled.

So instead of paying the insurance company extra free money for coverage they will never have to pay out for you, put the money you will save by cancelling the coverage in a savings account to pay for the damages yourself.

Car Insurance Savings #10

Try the tracking devices. Insurance companies like Progressive are pushing tracking devices you can voluntarily use to track how safe you drive. Safe drivers are supposed to see decreases in their insurance premiums thanks to these devices.

Car Insurance Savings #11

See if your insurance company offers a pay for use program. These types of programs are perfect for those that don’t drive very much as your insurance premium is adjusted to match the lower than average use of your vehicle.

Car Insurance Savings #12

Work on your credit score. Yes, I know this one doesn’t make sense, but insurance companies still rate premiums on credit scores. The higher the credit score the lower the insurance premium.

Car Insurance Savings #13

Shop around for insurance coverage to find what company can get the best car insurance savings for you in 2013!

New 2013 Car Insurance Laws

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 01/31/2013

Drivers beware of new car insurance laws that became effective January 1st.

new 2013 car insurance laws

Life is definately not a day at the beach thanks to some new car insurance laws.

Okay, we are a month into a new year now and every year there were new car insurance laws that take effect as of January 1st. Were there any new car insurance laws in your state that you don’t know about and have been breaking for the last month? Was your car insurance coverage or premium affected by any new laws?

While we can’t cover all of the changes that were made January 1st, here 3 we wanted to share.

New Car Insurance Laws in Ohio

The Ohio legislature has passed this new insurance law, but it is still waiting to be signed by the governor before it becomes official. The new law would require a huge increase in the amount of liability coverage that Ohio drivers have to carry to be able to legally drive. The coverage would go from $7,500 in property damage liability coverage being required to $25,000 being required to drive.

You can be assured that this will raise your car insurance premiums if passed.

New Car Insurance Laws in Alabama

For Alabama, it’s not a new law that went into effect, but the enforcement of a law. As of January 1st, law enforcement officers, state employees that issue license plates, and the Department of Revenue all will now immediately check to make sure that drivers in Alabama are insured.

This immediate insurance verification will be verified through the State of Alabama’s Online Insurance Verification System. This information will be used whenever a driver is pulled over for a traffic violation, as well as when getting a license plate. The Department of Revenue will use the system to send insurance verification requests to residents that were convicted of violating the mandatory insurance law, had their driver’s license suspended, or have had their vehicle registration suspended.

New Car Insurance Laws in Florida

In the state of Florida, big changes were made to their PIP coverage as of January 1st. The states already mandatory PIP coverage was amended to try and cut back on the amount of car insurance fraud in the state. I have my own reservations about this reasoning as it seems that the only thing they really cut back on was the coverage that you are provided versus the amount you have to pay for.

Regardless of my opinion, the new law requires that any medical attention has to be sought within 15 days of the accident or your claim will automatically be denied.

The new law also splits the mandatory $10,000 in coverage that you have to purchase into two different categories: emergency and non-emergency. There will still be $10,000 for emergency coverage, but per the new law an emergency only exists if the patient health is in serious jeopardy, there is a serious impairment to bodily functions, or a serious dysfunction to an organ or body part.

All other injuries will only have $2,500 in coverage thanks to this new car insurance law.

Car Insurance Guidebook Unravels the Car Insurance Mystery

Unless you work in the car insurance industry, the topic is probably a mystery to you. The words deductible, comprehensive, collision, liability, premium, loss of use and bodily injury are all gibberish when they reach your ears.

Unfortunately, insurance is something that you are required to have by law if you want to drive. Because of how confusing it is many people go around in almost an insurance daze while they get car insurance quotes from the auto insurance companies that they have heard of. In reality, they are completely lost as to what they are actually buying.

Instead of looking at what each insurance company offers in the terms of protection for both themselves and their car, they are instead looking for cheap car insurance. Finding the cheapest car insurance coverage makes having to buy the required product all that much less painful, but misses the whole point of having insurance.

Learning about insurance through your insurance agent or websites like Car Insurance Guidebook will give you the upper hand when you looking for car insurance. You can take your knowledge and not only find the best price for insurance, you can use it to find really great insurance to protect you and your assets. Then you aren’t stuck settling for just average car insurance that can hurt you financially if you ever need it because there isn’t enough protection.

For example, when looking for insurance the car insurance rates are just the first of many factors that need to be taken into account when you are shopping around for car insurance. You also need to take into account the type of vehicle that you are driving. Many people don’t know this.

Are you driving around a vehicle that is a new sedan and can be protected under any blanket insurance policy? Or do you have an old car that you fixed up that needs special protection and could be better covered under classic car insurance?

Don’t just assume that when you compare car insurance that it will be a one-size-fits-all policy. This is where the insurance knowledge will come in handy; you will know what you need to protect yourself and your vehicle.

You will understand what your insurance agent is talking about when they use insurance terms and you will actually be able to make an informed decision. This is much better for you instead of the “nod and smile” approach people take in their insurance agent’s office.

Also just like your life changes your insurance needs will change. This year you may just need to learn about the best deductible to have. Next year you may need to educate yourself on car insurance for young drivers. As the years pass, motorcycle insurance may be something you will need to know.

Many wise people say that you never stop learning, so take their advice and educate yourself on the insurance that you spend a lot of money on and can’t get away with not having.
