A look at the top 20 vehicles with the best insurance rates for 2012.

Insurance rates can vary drastically. One year a vehicle may be listed on a list like the one below as a cheap vehicle to insure, while the next year they may be nowhere on the list because of a model redesign. Insurance rates on vehicles also depend heavily on the information of the people that are driving them.

The following list was released by insure.com and was based on a middle-aged driver with a good driving record.

Now, with all that said, here are the 20 vehicles with the best insurance rates in 2012:

  1. Toyota Sienna LE
  2. Toyota Sienna

Toyota Camry Insurance Analysis

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Research Last Updated: 06/17/2012

With a high safety rating, the Toyota Camry is a good car to consider for decent insurance rates.

Toyota Camry

The 2012 Toyota Camry is sportier and safer all at the same time.

The Toyota Camry is Toyota’s high-end sedan, putting it just above Toyota’s Corolla model. The body is bigger and the interior is a little bit nicer than the Corolla, which also makes it more expensive to purchase and insure.

The Camry has been redesigned twice in the last five years (2007 and again in 2012), so you may find that the insurance rates for a Camry will vary greatly depending on the year of the one you purchase. The most recent redesign in 2012 made the body of the Camry a little sportier. At the same time it has been rated safer than previous Camry models by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. So, it will be interesting to see how these new changes will affect insurance rates after more data is collected on this newer model.

Toyota Camry: Insurance Institute Safety Rating

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) tests vehicles to see how they handle an accident and how well they protect the occupants. They rate the vehicles as good (highest rating), acceptable, marginal and poor (lowest rating). These results not only tell you as a consumer how safe the car is if you get into an accident, but also helps insurance companies determine how much to charge for the insurance on these vehicles.

After frontal crash tests, the IIHS gave the Toyota Camry a “good” rating for the 1997-2012 models. The 1994-1996 models received an “acceptable” rating.

With side impact tests, the 2006-2012 models were still rated as “good”. The 2002-2006 models (without the optional side airbags), however, were rated as “poor”.

Overall, the Toyota Camry was rated as having a “low risk of any significant injuries” making it a safe vehicle to be in during an accident. The newly redesigned 2012 model has even earned the honor of being the IIHS’s Top Safety Pick for 2012.

Toyota Camry Insurance Rating Factors

The price to insure a Toyota Camry will always depend on the amount of insurance you put on it, as well as the information of the people that will be driving the vehicle. The good news with a Toyota Camry is that it is not one of the most expensive cars to purchase insurance for. However, it is also not one of the cheapest either, it falls somewhere in between.

With the good safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the insurance rates for medical payments and personal injury protection should be fairly low.

The additional safety features on this vehicle (daytime running lights, antilock brakes and electronic stability control) do all help decrease the chance of an accident. Also the Toyota Camry is a sedan and cannot do as much harm to other people’s property as larger vehicles can. All of which can lead to lower liability rates as well.

It is the comprehensive and collision coverage where you may see the higher premiums because of the higher cost to repair the Toyota Camry.

Because insurance rates are based off so many different factors, it is best to contact your agent or insurance company for a quote on how much it would be to insure a Toyota Camry.

Another Unique Infinity Auto Insurance Customer

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Advertising, Research Last Updated: 06/13/2012

Infinity Auto Insurance adds unique lifestyles into their commercial line based on uniqueness.

Summary

Commercial follows the subject around in his daily life while the announcer is talking.

Announcer: Every minute is a celebration. You dance to your own beat. You’re music moves us. You are the life of the party.

Screen changes to subject being on a card with a row of other cards behind him. Each of the cards has a picture of what we assume are other Infinity Auto Insurance customers and a title of how they are also unique.

Announcer: You deserve an insurance company who’s in step with the rhythm of your life.

Commercial goes back to main subject and his life, as well as the company logo and phone number now being on the screen.

Announcer: That’s why we offer discounts on car insurance, as much as 40% – yes, 40%.

Screen changes again to show the Infinity Driver’s Club membership card as well as graphics of what this membership can help you with.

Announcer: Call now and the first 50 callers will get our Infinity Driver’s Club membership free. That’s right, membership to 24 hour roadside assistance free.

Screen changes for the last time with “Unique……just like you!”, the Infinity Car Insurance logo, and phone number to Infinity Car Insurance on screen.

Infinity Auto Insurance- unique just like you. Call 866-501-7771.

Point of Commercial

This Infinity Auto Insurance commercial focuses on not just the uniqueness of their customers, like previous commercials, but on the uniqueness of their lives as well. They are making the point that because you aren’t like anyone else; your insurance needs are also going to be different from everyone else.

Infinity Auto Insurance wants you to know that they are “unique just like you” and can get you the coverage that is best for your “unique” needs.

What They Want you to Do

Infinity Auto Insurance wants you to call them directly. They offer no method of contacting them other than a direct telephone number. They also never make mention of contacting an Infinity Auto Insurance agent for a quote.

Not only does Infinity want you to contact them, they want you to do so now. With offering their Infinity Driver’s Club membership for free they are trying to create a sense of urgency. They want you to feel like you need to drop everything now to call them for insurance.

My Opinion

I personally don’t like this Infinity Auto Insurance commercial. There is just something about it that makes me want to roll my eyes whenever I see it.

However, the commercial is effective. It creates a sense of urgency to get people to call, and this type of marketing has been shown to increase the chance that people will contact a business. The commercial also makes you start to wonder about your current insurance and whether it fits your needs or is a “cookie cutter” policy. Lastly, the commercial offers something for free; which is also another marketing method that has been shown to not just increase the chance that you will contact a business, but that you will buy something also.

So, while the consumer in me wants to give this Infinity Auto Insurance commercial a thumbs down, the advertising marketer in me provides a stronger argument to give it a thumbs up.

How Do I Report a Bad Experience With an Insurance Company?

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Ask An Insurance Question Last Updated: 06/16/2012

Reporting a bad experience with an insurance company is important to protect yourself and others.

All of us have had a bad experience with an insurance company at one time or another. If you haven’t, there will be one at some point in your life. There are different levels of bad experiences you can have and you are the only one that can determine if the experience is bad enough that you need to tell someone about it.

For example, a disagreement over a small refund may not be something that you want to waste your time and effort on. Whereas a situation where a tow truck that should have been called to come get you off the side of the road wasn’t, when you have towing coverage, needs to be escalated.

In the situation with the tow truck, the first step you need to take is to call the phone number you called with the insurance company for the tow truck and ask to speak with a manager. If a tow truck was supposed to be called and was not, this could very well be an issue with the call center representative. If you don’t get anywhere with the manager, contact your insurance agent about the bad experience.

After the agent there is really nowhere else to go in this situation as the next level up is your state Insurance Commissioner or Department of Insurance. Because the situation with the tow truck would be more of a customer service issue there is really nothing they can do. The only times that the Department of Insurance or Insurance Commissioner would get involved after a bad experience is in the event of fraud or illegal activity by the insurance company.

Who Does the Insurance Company send the Totaled Vehicle Payment To?

Written by Michele Wilmonen. Posted in Ask An Insurance Question Last Updated: 06/23/2012

Even if the insurance policy says one name, the totaled vehicle payment always goes to the person listed on the title.

After an insurance company declares a vehicle from an accident a total loss, it is time to make the payment. During this process the insurance company is essentially buying the car from you and if you are not on the title, you can’t sell the car. This also means that if you are not on the title, the insurance company will not send the totaled vehicle payment to you.

If your lienholder (the company you make your car payment to) is on the title, the insurance company will send the totaled vehicle payment to them. The lienholder then uses the check towards whatever you still owe them and will then send you what is left.

In the case of a married couple, if only one spouse is on the title, that is who the check is made out to, even if both spouses are on the insurance policy. This is why it is so very important to get the correct name on the title of a vehicle after you sell it or go through a divorce. You don’t want someone else to get the money you are entitled to from a totaled vehicle payment.

Car Insurance Guidebook Unravels the Car Insurance Mystery

Unless you work in the car insurance industry, the topic is probably a mystery to you. The words deductible, comprehensive, collision, liability, premium, loss of use and bodily injury are all gibberish when they reach your ears.

Unfortunately, insurance is something that you are required to have by law if you want to drive. Because of how confusing it is many people go around in almost an insurance daze while they get car insurance quotes from the auto insurance companies that they have heard of. In reality, they are completely lost as to what they are actually buying.

Instead of looking at what each insurance company offers in the terms of protection for both themselves and their car, they are instead looking for cheap car insurance. Finding the cheapest car insurance coverage makes having to buy the required product all that much less painful, but misses the whole point of having insurance.

Learning about insurance through your insurance agent or websites like Car Insurance Guidebook will give you the upper hand when you looking for car insurance. You can take your knowledge and not only find the best price for insurance, you can use it to find really great insurance to protect you and your assets. Then you aren’t stuck settling for just average car insurance that can hurt you financially if you ever need it because there isn’t enough protection.

For example, when looking for insurance the car insurance rates are just the first of many factors that need to be taken into account when you are shopping around for car insurance. You also need to take into account the type of vehicle that you are driving. Many people don’t know this.

Are you driving around a vehicle that is a new sedan and can be protected under any blanket insurance policy? Or do you have an old car that you fixed up that needs special protection and could be better covered under classic car insurance?

Don’t just assume that when you compare car insurance that it will be a one-size-fits-all policy. This is where the insurance knowledge will come in handy; you will know what you need to protect yourself and your vehicle.

You will understand what your insurance agent is talking about when they use insurance terms and you will actually be able to make an informed decision. This is much better for you instead of the “nod and smile” approach people take in their insurance agent’s office.

Also just like your life changes your insurance needs will change. This year you may just need to learn about the best deductible to have. Next year you may need to educate yourself on car insurance for young drivers. As the years pass, motorcycle insurance may be something you will need to know.

Many wise people say that you never stop learning, so take their advice and educate yourself on the insurance that you spend a lot of money on and can’t get away with not having.
