Shelter Customer Reviews

Shelter Insurance was founded in 1946 as the insurance subsidiary of Missouri Farmers Association (MFA). A mutual insurance company, they primarily sell auto insurance and other insurance products in the Midwest. Shelter Insurance is headquarted in Columbia, Missouri.

    I have been with Shelter for about ten years. They insure both of my vehicles and my home. I’ve never had to process a claim, but my interactions with them have been really positive. My agent is helpful and always ready to answer questions or to try to find me new discounts if I ask. I have shopped around and feel that I get a great rate from Shelter.

    A few months ago I was late paying my insurance. If I got the notice that it was due, I overlooked it. Once I realized it was late, I called to get reinstated. I was told that there was a twenty-five dollar fee, but that in some cases it could be refunded. Because of my good payment history, an agent called me back later that night to inform me that they were refunding my late fee. I was able to print my insurance cards immediately and my coverage resumed.

    All in all, it was an excellent experience and I feel that Shelter wants to work with customers and keep customers for the long run. I also like that my agent is local, and that I can visit his office or call him on the phone if I have questions or concerns. He has helped me quickly and nicely when I sold my truck and bought a used SUV. He also sends me a birthday card every year which I think is a nice touch and makes me feel valued. At least, he remembers that I exist and I feel like if I do ever need Shelter to pay a claim, he will be there to help me.

    My boyfriend’s truck was hit by someone with Shelter insurance. The customer service rep Samantha B. was helpful, friendly, and cut us a check immediately after she received the estimate. They only required one estimate which was nice so we didn’t have to run all over town getting more of them.Anyway, he was hit on Monday, by Saturday we had the check in the mail. It really surprised me that there was no delay or effort to avoid payment. Samantha was also very good about responding to emails. Excellent job. I may switch from State Farm!

    I’ve had Shelter for about 15 years now. The company is very good at what they do. They offer me many discounts discounts as well as one for the military. There standards are very high quality and would recommend them to anyone.I have personal service form my agent who know me by name when I walk in the door to the office. I made the mistake of going to another company for a short time and needless to say that even though they were very slightly cheaper their service drove me back to Shelter within a year.

    When i got a ticket for not wearing my seat belt. They did not raise my insurance rate up at all in fact I have never had my insurance rate raised for any claim that I have ever had to file with them either.

    They also offer many different payment plans so that I can pick one that fits my budget. I can choose to pay my insurance every 6 months if I so wish Or I have the option for a monthly payment for both my vehicles.

    My agent is very hands on. He will come to your house to take pictures of vehicle damage for your claim if you are not able to take pictures or come to the office. When you come to the office his staff is very friendly and helpful they take the time to explain anything to you that you do not understand with a claim or any other insurance documents.
